A sanctuary for vulnerable tamariki and rangatahi.
Whakarato i te wāhi whakaruruhau mō ngā taiohi e whakapau kaha ana.
Ko wai matou?
Wairere is a kaupapa Māori care service for vulnerable tamariki and rangatahi, established in 2017 as a result of growing community concerns over the wellbeing of children in state care. The name “Wairere” refers to flowing waters and has a dual meaning for the organisation: Firstly, it signifies the currents and tides connecting New Zealand and the Pacific as recognition of the core Māori and Pacific values underpinning everything we do; Secondly, it signifies the flowing waters within our bodies, and reminds us that we are here to support tamariki in care to remove harmful obstructions in their life.
.
Balanced Care and Support
Wairere provides the following support resources to vulnerable tamariki and rangatahi across Aotearoa
homes/accommodation
transportation
mentoring and wraparound care
Wairere’s care model is best viewed through the lens of Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Kaupapa Māori perspective on holistic health and wellbeing, developed by Sir Mason Durie in 1984. The model describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui (meeting house) with four walls. These walls represent taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing), taha tinana (physical wellbeing) and taha whānau (family and social wellbeing). When all these things are in balance, we thrive. When one or more of these is out of balance our wellbeing is impacted.
Wairere Values
-
At Wairere, we believe in the power of whanau. We understand the importance of family relationships and a sense of belonging. While we do not replace a young person's own family, we create an environment where they feel valued and included. Our approach is rooted in strengthening bonds and providing a supportive community for all.
-
Upholding the mana of young people is a fundamental aspect of our mission. We empower our youth to make choices, set goals, and take control of their lives. We respect their unique journeys and decisions, providing guidance and support as partners in their journey towards independence and self-empowerment.
-
Manaakitanga is the embodiment of respect, generosity, and care. We extend these values not only to our young people but also to their families and our care partners. Our commitment to creating a nurturing environment, where kindness and respect are paramount, fosters a culture of trust and support for everyone we encounter.
-
We are committed to continuous growth and development. Whakapakari represents our dedication to improving, learning, and evolving. We strive to refine our methods, staying at the forefront of care to ensure our young people receive the best support possible.
